I thought I’d add something fun to PromoGuy dot Net, a Book Club. Later tonight I will add a new section the the Forums where you can post a review of a new, popular or interesting book. Might be fun.

Each week I will feature a new book. No one has to read a book a week, but if you HAVE read it, I’d love for you to share your review!

One book that has been on everyone’s lips is“Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman’s Search for Everything.” Love and Food, now you got my attention!!!

I have not had a chance to read it, but I’d like to hear your thoughts. Leave a comment here and let me, and everyone else, know what you thought.

I was listening to “First Wave” on Sirius today, and DEVO’s “Freedom of Choice” came on. Man, that took me back to my youth.

It reminded me that I wanted to post about the new Fidelity commercial. It features an older man who has realized his dream by making wine. I didn’t catch the name of the wine.

What caught my attention was that the commercial featured the DEVO version of “Workin’ in a Coalmine.” This single was from the “Heavy Metal” soundtrack and was originally released as a 45. At one point the 45 was bundled with the “New Traditionalists” LP, but it was never officially part of that album – until now. These days, it comes as a bonus track on New Traditionalists, with 2 other songs. Mighty cool!

Oh, and let’s not forget the DEVO and DISNEY collaboration (!?!) called DEV2.0. Yep, DEV2.0 is a group of tweens lip syncing to music provided (and produced) by the real DEVO. You can sample DEV2.0 on iTunes.

I was listening to an extended mix of “Point Of No Return” by Exposé and it didn’t sound right.

It was the song I knew. The instruments were nearly identical. The music was almost right. But it was all a little bit off.

I did a search and found out that there have been 2 versions of the group known as Exposé! Apparently in 1984, after the first group recorded “Point of No Return” and released an album, they broke up. All the members were eventually replaced by all-new girls in 1986. This new version of Exposé re-recorded “Point of No Return” which became a big hit (the other version was a hit too).

As best I can tell, the version I was listening to was the original release, not the version I familiar with, the 86 version.

Thankfully, all of the Exposé remixes have been collected on CD (well, not all, but many)and are available atazon.

By the way, word on the street is Exposé will soon be touring again!

I have really been having fun watching the magic of Cyril Takayama. Cyril is all over YouTube and Google, usually under the keywords: Japanese Magic, Japanese Street Magic, Japanese Magician, Cyril.

Apparently he has had 9 television specials in Japan (and several DVDs too), and appeared on numerous Japanese talk shows. You might compare him to David Blane, but that would be selling him short.

I first saw him performing the Table Coin Trick. (and – spoiler warning – here is a possible explanation of how it was done)

I like the way he drops English words throughout his patter.

I would sure like to see an entire show, maybe he will wind up in Branson one day.

Did you hear the new Transformation Nation commercial for Kohls? (or Khols if you transpose letters like me)

It features one of my favorite songs: In A Big Country….

I never seen you look like this without a reason
Another promise fallen through, another season passes by you

In a big country dreams stay with you
Like a lover’s voice fires the mountainside
Stay alive

The song is “In A Big Country” originally recorded by none other than Big Country from the LP/CD “The Crossing.”

Yeah, reminds me of when it came out, ahh, 1983. Good times.

Oh yeah, the song in the commercial is NOT Big Country. According to a message posted on the official Big Country website, it was performed by “session musicians” Jimmy Gnecco vocalist for the band “Ours,” just for the Kohls commercial, and is not (yet?) available for purchse.

There is a version of this song by Dashboard Confessionalwhich is being played in the Kohl’s stores, and you can buy this one, but it is not the same one in the commercial. Get it at iTunes

There is also a version by Face To Face.

I noticed in they left out the line:
I never took the smile away from anybody’s face
And that’s a desperate way to look for someone who is still a child

Which makes sense, it doesn’t really fit the commercial. The commercial is for the “Transformation Nation” campaign sponsored by Khol’s, and the video has images such as people hiking with a canoe on “transform trail” and proposing, then getting married.

I can’t seem to find much trace of it online, but I know that when Yes released the video for “Leave It” that they had at least 8 versions of it.

Maybe 10. 12?

MTV made a HUGE deal out of this too. They did a “World Premiere” for every single version, which of course, was true. Each video was a little different. All by the masterminds of Godley and Creme. In one the band would bounce all around. In another, their heads or bodies would spin around. One was acapella. I can’t recall all of the versions, though I tried to video tape them all on my Betamax.

After the debut, MTV would air the various versions randomly, putting a # beside the title of the song (“Leave It” #5). Eventually, once they had released all of the versions, a final version was made that incorporated parts of the many other versions. Sort of a “Best Of” if you will. See below.

I find it very odd that in the age of DVD that Yes would release a collection of videos and NOT include all of these different versions for “Leave It.” Odder still, that the internet has very little record of this odd little moment in music (video) history.
