Can I officially call for an end to the musical montages with sound bites from tragedies?
First we had the Springsteen song from "Jerry Maguire" which made a bad song tolerable, the "had me at hello" clip was a nice reminder of a good movie. Bad song, good movie.
OK, you know, the Titanic song with Celine was bad enough, but when they added the sound bites from the movie it was a little better. "I won't let go" says she, but alas, she does. Liar!
Then we had some DJ's get all clever on us with the World Trade Center attacks and they cut news clips into about nearly every song you could think of. There were at least 30 different songs where we got to hear snippets of screams, explosions, reporters, rescue workers and memorials. The first one I heard was moving, but they just kept coming!
At some point, it becomes less about making a tribute and more about "being the first" to hit the air.
Now, driving to work today they hit me with another disaster-sound bite song about the Space Shuttle Columbia.
Do I need this?
Do you?
Do the families of the Astronauts need this?
Good lawd, can you imagine the husband or wife of one of the deceased driving home only to hear with the sounds of your loved one's death set to the tune of "Where Are You Going?" by Dave Matthews Band? (and nothing against DMB either, they are an unfortunate victim of this tacky genre of music).
I can just see these DJ's watching the news Saturday and leaping to hit the record button. That night they sit with their VCRs gleefully transferring the clips to tape, up all night mixing it together and proudly playing it for their Program Director Monday morning. "Get it on the air!" he screams and within moments of airplay, the switchboard lights up with sobbing listeners asking when it will be played again so they can tape it. The station makes an MP3 and sends it out to their "sister" stations in the Clear Channel network and soon the song is heard all over the place. And on and on it goes.
I'm sick of it! The WTC mixes were bad enough, must we endure this after every tragedy?
Enough is enough!

I'd have to agree. Hearing that Enya song over and over again was starting to drive me nuts.
Enya was the most recent melody I had heard which had to due with the disaster of 9/11.Because I had only heard that one,I thought not much to it.Other than it kind of sucked. But no kidding they have mad more songs on the disaster.Unbelievable.If it isnt tragic enough to hear on the news.At least to make you squirm. But asking us to listen to it improvised with tastless efforts.Like you said splice videos etc.It is just phewie.I never realized to the extents people manipulate our lives with there cheap effects.I like the Promoguy:)
I remember a song by John Denver written for the crew of Challenger called Flying For Me, very appropriate, except that, of course, it was by John Denver.
i can't spell my own goddamn name.
HOLY CRAP! That John Denver crack was hilarious Paty!!!!!
I was reading this article in a magazine and they showed the picture of Daniel Pearl, head down, gun pointed at him... it's a well known photo. I was in the middle of reading the article and got called away. I had left it open on that page, with the intent to finish reading it. But I couldn't. Every time I walked past that photo, my heart sank. I had to get rid of it. I can't imagine what it must be like for his family to see that photo everywhere. I can't imagine the pain a family member must feel when a loved one dies in such a public/publicized manner.
