I don't understand College Football. Or more precisely, I don't understand how Bowl Games work.
I thought the Orange Bowl was "THE" Bowl game to be in. But I was told by some friends that no, that is no longer the championship game. What? When did this happen? I thought the Orange Bowl was the be-all, end-all of college sports! Who moved it?
Then I am listening to the Sports Animal radio talk show (quite by accident) and they go off about how this team and that team will be picked for a Bowl game and so that team won't make it. Huh?
Are Bowl Games not for the best of the best anymore? Does it all come down to ratings? I get the impression that a Bowl can invite a team to play and depending on who they pick that determines who the opposing team can be. Right?
I mean, the OU Sooners have only lost one game in the Big 12, but apprently they have little chance of getting to the championship game. Whatupwithdat?
Like I said, I really don't know anything about how all this works. But if someone could explain it to me I would sure appreciate it.

Dear Mr Promo: apparently you think the Orange Bowl is the be-all-end-all because of your Oklahoma upbringing. That is the bowl game they always aspired to, and it was often for the National Championship. But no more. Now the Orange, Sugar, and Fiesta are the "big three" as far as bowls go, and each year, one is designated to have teams 1 and 2 go at it for the National Championship. The reason the Sooners have only lost one game, no, wait, when did you write this? They lost this weekend, so they've lost twice. Anyway, there are 2 teams in College Football who're undefeated, so they'll be going to the Big Game. (which, if I'm not mistaken, will be the Fiesta Bowl this time, so maybe your Sooners will go Orange after all.)
Now, may I also throw in that bowl games (and don't get me wrong, I like them) are now all about money. So if you win your conference, but your fans won't travel over 100 miles to see a ball game, you're not getting invited to a good bowl. Or if you're 2d or so in your conference, which designates you to the Second Place Dudes bowl, but you've been to the Second Place Dudes bowl for the past 5 years straight, the Second Place Dudes bowl might pawn you off on someone else to get someone different in their bowl. But in the end it comes down to, after the Big Three bowl teams are picked, how many people your school is gonna send to a bowl and how much money they're gonna spend while they're there. Did that help?
