OK, we all know Comet Curson is Spyware, right?
Well, it never fails! I go to a site and BOOM! It installs Comet Cursor before I can stop it! WTF?
I hate those things anyway, now they are Spyware!
I never could figure out what I needed to change to prevent it, until I happened upon this page. The CC people will now place a cookie in your browser that will prevent Comet Cursor from ever loading again!
And, this page tells you where in IE you need to change your settings.

another handy tool is "ad-aware" -- I think I got it from download.com. you run it, and it cleans up all the scary stuff sites dump in your registry and stuff. jay had a problem with one site that set itself as all sorts of defaults. couldn't access a page? this site would pop up instead. ad-aware cleaned it all up wonderfully.
Ad-Aware rocks. You could also edit your HOSTS file to point all the comet cursor download sites to something like 127.0.0.1
