March 13, 2006Music Heard in JC Penney Commercial: Bang A GongThe commercial features men in one, women in another, setting off alarms and other such events due to their "hotness" as they walk down a street. The song is a very familiar tune. You know it, dont' you? It is of course "Bang A Gong" made popluar in my Dad's generation by T Rex, and in my g-g-g-generation by The Powerstation featuring Robert Palmer. The JC Penney version is by Jakob Dylan You can hear the "exclusive" track on jcpenney.com. Just click the red "watch.click.buy.Shop Inside" banner in the middle of the page. It is worth noting that the track in the commercials is a very remixed version of the track that you can hear on the site. I am not ever sure it is Jakob, it sounds more like T Rex to me. Hard to know for sure. Not sure if you can buy it anywhere. Not much help am I? Posted by on March 13, 2006 @ March 13, 2006 08:57 AM 3 folks had something to say |
Marc Bolan's son Rolan Bolan has been very wise to allow as much marketing of his famous father's songs to as as many commercial outlets as possible. In some popular movies T.Rex songs seem to pop up every so often as well.
There is currently a Coke commercial heavy on play on Latin and Black networks that uses THE SLIDER.
The JC Penney commercial actually uses several different versions of BANG A GONG(actually titled GET IT ON in England, but American horn oriented group led by the late Bill Chase called Chase had released a hit song called GET IT ON in the U.S. months before the Bolan song).
GET IT ON is one of rock music's most durable anthems. The lyrics are certainly very sexual in nature, which makes the use in the JC Penney ad somewhat surprising. But the tune is so well loved that it's probably an effective hook for their goods.
Use of popular rock themes is becoming more popular as the public ages and music that was once counter culture such as GET IT ON becomes more mainstream.
The Doors song, BREAK ON THROUGH was the first choice of Cadillac in their ads, but infughting between the surviving band members in which former drummer John Densmore teamed up with the families of the late Jim Morrison and his common law wife, won a successful lawsuit that banned the other former band members as touring as The Doors or licensing music for advertising.
Yet for some like Rolan Bolan, it is a very good thing that his father's works have helped to provide the son some income. The public loves the clasic rock anthems and the new versions of GET IT ON are interesting takes on the song in the JC Penney ad. Fans of Marc Bolan songs would probably be interested in finding the full length versions of these songs for a better listen.

Posted by: brad at March 26, 2006 10:42 PMSo does anyone know how I can get the music for the T. Rex "Get It On" ad series for JC Penney? The Jakob Dylan one I am not interested in. But the very remixed version of the original by T. Rex was great. I have a very scratchy recording of the 56 second ad's music off streaming internet, but I want the real thing, especially if this is someone's rare and really well-done remix. Any ideas, anyone?
