September 27, 2005Music Heard in Vonage Commercial & Chevy Cobalt too: Woo Hoo Woo-Hoo-HooApparently, there was a surf-rock band called "The Statesmen" (or "The States Men" depending) who recorded a ditty called "Roo Buh Doo Buh Doo." I say apparently because I can't seem to find the song. Could be it exists only in someone's closet on 12" vinyl. Anyway, word has it that old song was the inspiration for music heard in the Vonage television commercials and (briefly) the Chevy Coblat commercials. The song is "Woo-Hoo" by the 5,6,7,8's, as found on the Kill Bill v1 soundtrack. Chevy was not informed by the music company that Vonage had also licensed that same song. Tisk, tisk. Always buy exclusive rights Chevy. According to this article, Chevy pulled the ads and replaced the "Woo-Hoo" song with "Over Under Sideways Down," from British band The Yardbirds. Note: This "Woo-Hoo" song is not to be confused with the Blur "Woo-Hoo" (Song 2) Interestingly, in 2004 Hotwire.com ran a commercial featuring some surf music. It just happened to be "Roo Buh Doo Buh Doo" but it was a cover version by Rockabilly band "Los High Tops." The Statesmen song if you can track it down, allegedly can be found on "Complete Insane Madness" v2 and something called "Pebbles" #17 & "Best of Pebbles" v2. Update: I have since heard "Roo Buh Doo Buh Doo" and, at least to me, it sounds nothing like "Woo Hoo." Considerable credit for this information goes to "Counting Sheep" and this blog entry. Thanks!
