April 02, 2004Not the Geek I thought I wasWhich is not to say I don't have my Geek tendencies. I do. Maybe too many. But I think I am more of a Geek in spirit. Because as much as I am fascinated by "costuming" I just don't do it anymore. I have made a few costumes over the years: Edward Scissorhands, The Shadow, The Invisible Man, Clark Kent, Fred Krueger, and a bad "Ghostbusters" outfit. I had a blast making them! Even though I had fun wearing them to the costume contests at work (usually only at Halloween). But you know, I think I liked the creativity of making them more than wearing them. I ever worked a few years in the March-of-Dimes sponsored Haunted House. That was WAY fun, getting to be the ALIENs Alien one night, Freddy the next, Dracula another. Yet, I've never costumed up for a Sci-Fi or Comic Book convention. I don't attend them these days, but when I did, I loved to look at those creative costumes. Does that make me a Costume Voyeur? Star Trek conventions are interesting, because folks can't seem to leave the standard uniforms alone. They have to customize them with Kilts or Dreadlocks or something of their heritage. It worked for Worf, but some of the concepts I've seen don't. However, Sci-Fi con's have some of the most outlandish costumers I've ever seen! I much prefer the costumes seen at DragonCon or MegaCon. Not that I've ever been (but I wanna). I probably would go to a few Cons, were I with someone who shared interest in that sort of thing. Heck there is even a chance I'd costume as well, if the right idea came along. But for now, I just sit on the sidelines. An Armchair Costumer. So, while I like to think of myself as being pretty geeky, a look at photo album's like RisingSun.net just go to show I am nowhere in their leauge. In fact I am so out of touch that I don't even know who 90% of these costumes are supposed to be. I think I need a Geek with experience, dedication, training and certification to help me go through these photos!
