February 6, 2004Quiznos Freaks Me OutOK, as if the guy sucking on the wolf wasn't bad enough, Quiznos has now given us singing roadkill. Have you seen these commercials? They give me the creeps, man. I'd link to them, but they aren't on their site yet. They reminded me of those weird singing cats flash videos, you know? I, like many others, wondered what role RatherGood had in this, if any. You can find the answer here. I really wonder if this is doing Quiznos any good. Does it make me want lunch? No, I feel closer to losing lunch. Sure, a bunch of Bloggers are talking about the commercials, and the name is out there a lot. But do "normal" folks who see these spots becomre more apt to eat there? I doubt it. Seriously, what are these people thinking? Further Reading: Posted by on February 6, 2004 @ February 6, 2004 02:56 PM 62 folks had something to say |
They may be thinkin' "this'll get their attention" and apparently it works. Whether it sells more subs is a different story, but chalk up a point for name recognition... ;~))
Posted by: jenett at February 6, 2004 4:56 PMLin and I just saw that ad for Quizno's last night for the first time, and both of us just sat there dumbfounded. What the hell ARE those things? Hamsters on crack?!
And you know what? Viking kittens was the first thing that popped into my head after the initial shock of the commercial wore off. Man, those hamsters (or whatever they are) are SCARY! :D
Posted by: Orb at February 6, 2004 10:38 PMActually, they are monkeys, believe it or not. They've been on the net quite a while before the commercial, singing about the moon. You can find the original here: http://www.rathergood.com/moon_song/
I personally find commercial hillarious, but I'd never eat there anyway. I think all the sandwhich chains are nasty.
Also, going back to the wolves...I think people missed the point. It says OTHER people's subs are like sucking a wolf's teet. The guy eating Quiznos is the "civilized" one. The fact that this went over most viewers' heads doesn't help Quiznos, but then again, this is America.
Posted by: JM at February 7, 2004 4:43 PMBeing Serious for once:
I actually find the commercials quite entertaining. While the little creatures are gross, I think it is part of the reason it is so amusing. I believe that the commercial aired on Super Bowl Sunday, and it was just funny that such a cheap looking commercial could get a person's attention after all of the money had been spent on other commercials that could only have half of the effect. I still laugh everytime I see the commercial.
I have talked to some people who believe it is dumb as you do. And I can understand their (and yours) reasoning for it. It is a rather pointless commercial, and it doesn't persuade me to eat at quiznos as would some other antic such as showing an incredibly tasty sub on tv for the entire thirty seconds. However, it does make me think of quiznos, and consider trying a quiznos sub.
Also, I would like to note that the commercial used to be available for viewing on the quiznos site, but recently has been removed. Hopefully they will post it again so that those of you who haven't seen the commercial can view it to either see how comical or how dumb it is depending on your preferences.
I can see how quiznos could begin to make viewers wonder just exactly what those in charge of marketing have been smoking when they brainstorm, considering the bizarre wolf commercial that you mentioned and previously had a discussion about. If you believed that the wolf commercial was in bad taste, well at least the new commercial isn't as mentally disturbing as the images that the previous "Raised by Wolves" commercial provided.
Posted by: Argo at February 8, 2004 10:23 PMi hate their ads. i am repulsed and disgusted and highly confused by their current ones. what is wrong with them.
Posted by: Raspil at February 8, 2004 11:19 PMFunny you would make an entry about them, I just wrote them a letter about just this. My son was freaked out by them, and I cringe when the commericals are on. I'm wondering is that what the meat in their sandwhichs are made of, money/rat/varmit meat?
Have a wonderful monday.
Posted by: michele at February 9, 2004 1:57 AMI've only eaten at a Quizno's once, and it was okay. But I saw the first one of those ads and *laughed my a** off!* They are just plain funny... a little on the disgusting side, sure, but get a sense of humor people!
Posted by: -Dave! at February 9, 2004 2:30 AMHey, I think all of the Quizno ads are funny. I don't understand what is wrong with people who don't think they are funny. Like Dave said, some people just need to have a sense of humor.
They make these ads to get people's attention and to and get their name out. It seems to have worked. It's the shock value that gets people talking. Even if the first thought is "that is gross" and "I would never eat at that place", they have gotten you to remember the name.
Posted by: SoupCanMan at February 9, 2004 12:11 PMdude, those quiznos commercials are THE BEST! i'm sure whoever the genius who thought those little mutant chinchillas up was having a great acid trip ;-)
Posted by: jim at February 9, 2004 1:26 PMThis commercial was so disgusting! I had been a long time patron of this franchise and I will never set foot in these stores again! It actually makes my stomache turn to think about the little creatues singing and dancing all around the subs. The person that came up with this ad to bring in more customers was definately not thinking at all! The quizno's franchise needs new writer's cuz they really bombed on this one!
Posted by: Wendy at February 9, 2004 1:40 PMI agree with soupcanman and Dave, the commercials are really funny. Even if you find it dumb, I don't understand why it is disguisting. The creatures aren't puking or anything, they just look funny. And if we think that things are disguisting just because they look funny, well then what do we think of people that we think look funny. They're not gross or anything, they can't help it that they look funny.
Posted by: Argo at February 9, 2004 2:44 PMi like to think i know what is funny to me, and this commercial wasn't. that doesn't mean i (or anyone else who thinks their commercials are sickening) need to get a sense of humor. these are the things that make us who we are. embrace them, don't shun those who think differently. that is unfair.
Posted by: Raspil at February 9, 2004 5:49 PMI agree. But you said in a previous comment, quote "what's wrong with them." Just because they don't find it funny doesn't mean that they need to get a sense of humor and it doesn't mean that they should be shunned. However, those who created it and enjoy it also shouldn't be shunned and considered to have something wrong with them.
Posted by: Argo at February 9, 2004 6:22 PMI have been watching this commercial for a week now and I really can't believe that corporate thinks positive marketing can come from rodents singing and dancing around their subs. I called a local store and asked if they use rat or hamster meat in the sandwiches ? The reply was I don't know. Maybe if they hired Mr. Hanky to dot some "hanky" drizzle on the sandwich they could do just as well. I guess if you just invested your life savings in a franchise you could begin contemplating suicide.
Posted by: Ray C at February 10, 2004 5:18 PMI hope you are joking about actualy call Quiznos and asking if they used Rat or Hamster Meat! How Stupid are you. If you actually think that just because they had those fuzz balls dancing around the subs that they make their sub from them you are very dumb.
People, what is wrong wrong with all of you. It was just another attempt to get your attention. When you look back at other Quizno's ads they have never been serious. If you are taking all ads you see at face value than maybe you should become a Recipient of Darwin Award (darwinawards.com).
Posted by: SoupCanMan at February 10, 2004 8:09 PMI beleive that the "Singing/Dancing Mutant dentally retarded Monkeys" are just out of context in a food commercial. It just doesn't put me in the mood to eat.... Conversely... I do remember the commecial and after going to the rathergood website, I found the MoonSong quite amusing and rather funny in a quirky way. Other people I work with seem to agree
Posted by: Jellophane at February 11, 2004 7:52 AMI find the whole commercial rather disterbing. I can't believe they think that commercial makes me feel like eating. I have to say on a scale of 1 to 10 of commercials I like the least, This is at the top of the list.
This has been the only commerical that has ever made me want to contact a company to ask them what were you thinking when you made this?
On the other hand. Somebody made good money making the stupid commercial and I'm sure they are sitting back and enjoying the fact that we are all talking about them more for doing a awful commercial. We wouldn't be talking about them right now if they had done a mainsteam ad!
Posted by: flameangel at February 12, 2004 1:40 AMI think those creatures are HILARIOUS! There is *no doubt* in my mind that whoever came up with that stuff is a serious computer geek!
Posted by: Darth Beaver at February 15, 2004 10:19 PMdudes! this commercial is so friggen awesome!! I'm obsessed with it and i wanna go to quizno's now! :) and with any coupon a dollar off?! sweet! :) GO! X MONKIES! XX MONKIES ON ACID!
you people need a sense of humor... good god! no wonder us teens don't like adults..
Posted by: kyra at February 16, 2004 12:10 AMRight on Kyra. That commercial kicks A**.
Posted by: Argo at February 16, 2004 6:33 PMHey, when i first saw this commercial i was wondering what the hell those creatures have to do with eating and how the people who created the ad could think that they would make me hungry.
I then later realised that the point of the commercial was not to make me hungry because of the dancing creatures, but to get my attention and inform me about the promorion in which you can use ANY coupon from ANYWHERE to get $1 off a sub at Quizno's.
You people that think it should be taken off the air, decided to stop eating there, and who are bashing the ad should lighet up a bit, it's just an ad. If you think they use tainted meat in their sandwhiches because they have strange looking creatures in their commercial, then you must be very immature, uneducated, and ignorant in general.
Posted by: Josh at February 17, 2004 12:22 AMI think they should do dancing mad cows in their next commercial.

Posted by: Shannon at February 18, 2004 2:41 PMright on, if you guys think this commercial is stupid, well then what about that mcdonalds one where they are playing poker for fries. for one thing, who plays poker for fries, and for another thing, wouldn't they be cold and nasty by the time they win. also, if i was playing poker for fries, and the person who won looked at me stupidly and chomped into a fry like the winner does in the commercial, I'd punch him in the nose and take his fries and run away. But one thing is for sure, it got me to pay attention to mcdonalds and be like, hmmm...I could go for some fries tonight. So then I would go to McDonalds if I wasn't too lazy and that can of bean soup wasn't so much easier. But you all get the point, don't you?
Posted by: Argo at February 18, 2004 3:53 PMI think they look like chicken nuggets with feet. Too creepy.
Posted by: jj at February 19, 2004 3:19 PMI just wrote the company at there site about those singing roadkills or whatever the hell they are and told them that they made me sick and I will never eat there sandwiches again.Want to know what they did? They sent me an email which took me to another site of there's were the damn little crack hamsters were dancing around a sandwich singing....I am going to write there CEO.
Posted by: Ronald at February 19, 2004 5:43 PMLove it or hate you have to admit that it gets and keeps your attention. After disparaging the commercial to anyone who'd listen I found myself humming "We love the Subs". It's a definite earworm. Now I'm a convert and look forward to seeing it - and even tell my friends to check it out. I don't think I'm too far from wrong to suggest that their target demograph is NOT us baby boomers. So lighten up and go buy a sub. I'd rather see the spongemonkeys than old Subway Jared any day.
Posted by: Bob at February 20, 2004 1:53 PMI'm very glad to have come across this site, because I thought I was missing something with the whole Quizno's campaign. After reading some of the posts, I feel that I am truly justified in thinking 'what in the world are the ad execs thinking at Quizno's?' As if the off-key singing isn't enough (while annoying, the song is a bit humorous), they have these unidentifiable objects with eyes and teeth singing about these delicious subs -- turns my stomach thinking about the commercial and I definitely can't stand watching it anymore. I think that maybe it's a matter of too much stimuli (the singing along with the harsh visuals). One last thing -- is there a corporate policy that hats/hair coverings should be worn while working around food? If not, there should be one. Most Quizno's that I've been to don't seem to have a 'hair covering' policy. This is ridiculous, since it is so easy for hair(s) to fall into food. Have I ever found a hair in my food? I'd rather not say. Okay, I'm really not hungry for lunch right now.
Posted by: RB at February 20, 2004 3:55 PM-Yes, they are creative.
-Yes they garner attention.
-Yes, I have a sense of humour and I can appreciate the cute weirdness of the ads (such as it is).
-Yes I am talking about the ads.
-But no, the ads don't work for me. I don't want to eat there because of the ads (and even with 1$ off coupons, the subs are too expensive).
Well, what it comes down to is quite simple - I am no longer in the 18-34 demographic. Simply put, "I just don't get it."
And that's fine, clearly, plenty of folks DO get it, who are, most likely, 18-34.
So, hoorah for Quiznos and hoorah for the target demographic. if you enjoy them, good. But alas, the rest of us are left asking "WTF?"
Posted by: Promo at February 20, 2004 10:37 PMThe ads are really disgusting , i'd like to see the sales figures for the quarter to see if it worked !!!! we have one coming to town, next sat. the 28th is the opening, we wont be there i'm sorry , i will have it in my head that it's rat meat. one more thing, WHY ????????????????????
Posted by: susan p at February 22, 2004 4:05 PMHey Promo,
I don't see why you are getting so worked up about this ad. I think the fact that you are putting up such a fuss about the ad proves that you are some how not understanding the fact that they don't care what you think and Quiznos is not out to please just you. This goes for anyone else that thinks in a similar fashion. It is obvious just by the content of your web site that you have something to prove. There are worse things out in the world and you complain about one insignificant ad. Don't get me wrong it is funny reading all the postings, put up by people who are obviously under educated and unable to deal with the simple facts of life. I guess the point I am trying to get to is that you, and others, need to wake up to the fact that bitching about this day after day after day is not going to do anything. In conclusion have a nice day :)
SoupCanMan
Whoa, soupcanman must have a bug up his bum! He he. But I did have a nice day after he said to. But he does have many valid points. If we are to analyze every commercial as has been done to the monkeys one, then commercials would really have a crazy message. If that's how that worked, I wouldn't eat at Hardees because they show a guy who can't even open a bag of cereal, and then the message there must be that Hardees is the place to eat if you are retarded. And after watching the mcdonalds commercial where they gamble for fries, I would think that I could only eat at McDonalds if I had a gambling problem. And this could go on forever. Only cowboys could drink certain types of beer, etc etc.
Also, what makes everyone think that now it's made out of monkey meat. Are McDonalds Burgers made of Clowns, Hamburglers, and other funny creatures such as grimmaces. Are friskies made out of cats because we see cats on the commercials. Is KFC made out of old war heroes? Are there chihuahas in Taco Bell's food? Is subways food composed of Jared? I don't think so. If those of you who criticize it aren't in the 18-34 demographic, my only guess is that you are like five or something to actually think that it is composed of monkey meat. Otherwise, you would have to be over thirty five, and my guess would be that you would understand that NOBODY makes food out of monkey meat and sells it unless you are writing your post from some third world country.
Posted by: Argo at February 23, 2004 7:03 PMI think it's the funniest commerical ever! I love it. I can't stop singing" They got a pepper bar!"
Posted by: anotehr Shannon at February 24, 2004 10:14 AMWhy are these things disgusting? Because they have funny looking eyes and mouths? Because they sing off key? If something like that turns your stomach heaven forbid you ever go to the mall and look at some people there. The purpose of a commercial is not always to make you hungry or want there food right now. It is simply for brand recognition. Like the commercial or hate it, you now know their name. And once again if you are turned off from their food by these creatures you have some sad weak stomachs.
Posted by: Dragoneye at February 24, 2004 9:31 PMI never pay any attention to commercials - ever! However, this one caught my attention. I find it facinating in a bizarre way. I usually drop what I'm doing to run to the TV if I hear it. I like the singing & the jingle. It's kinda alternative. I Love these ads. Will I eat at Quiznos because of it. Don't know, but the ads won't stop me. Funny thing, I'm 41 and my sis tells me her 12 year old son hates these commercials, although he is obsessed with them! Great job! -Michelle

Posted by: maureen at February 25, 2004 5:04 PM"We love the subs! 'Cuz they are good to us. The Quiznos subs. They are tasty, they are crunchy, they are warm because they toast them. They got a pepper bar!" Come on folks...they GOT a PEPPER BAR!!! LET'S GO.
I want to get a group of ten or more and walk into my neighborhood Quizno's singing....."We love the subs . . . where's the pepper bar?"
FYI. Those "monkeys" are Koala Bears, courtesy of Photoshop.
This is a hoot, and they make an excellent sub. Stop taking yourselves so seriously.
I completely agree. These "roadkill" Quiznos ads are disgusting! Personally, I have stopped eating at Quiznos. Any food chain that uses a flattened rat as their spokesperson is obviously trying to run their business into the ground! Their marketing manager should be fired!!!
Posted by: Veronica at February 25, 2004 7:21 PMEarth to Veronica....
Those "roadkill" are Koala Bears, courtesy of Photoshop.
If these two commercials really tipped you over the edge, what did you think about the past "wolf" commercials?
And, you suggest that you have just NOW stopped eating at Q's because of your issue with "roadkill." I would say that you are less than truthful about being a frequent patron of Quizno's.
You might want to read ALL the posts before you show yourself on the www.
Posted by: hermann at February 25, 2004 8:31 PMThose sponge monkeys are cool! It's just one of those stupid songs that get stuck in your head. Not in your bread, toasty bread that is. Although it is dead animals your eating anyways, where do you think steak and chicken come from? The people that came up with this commercial are genius' so all you nay-sayers go eat somewhere else.
Posted by: Eric at February 25, 2004 9:27 PMQuiznos needs to hire a new ad agency or department. Quiznos may have name recognition but it is not positive. I cannot eat at an establishment that has such gross commercials. Eating a sub out of a garbage can or out of a dog's mouth or a man sucking a wolf teat does not make me want to try one of their subs. I keep thinking they will realize they are actually selling subs to eat and stop trying to gross everyone out. As for the rat creatures, they are not as gross as previous commercials but they don't make me want to go out and eat a Quiznos sub.
Posted by: Ann at February 25, 2004 10:02 PMI refused to eat at Quiznos when they had the commercial about the man neglecting his parakeet. I was horrified by that and forbade everyone I knew to eat there. Now that the little monkey/rat dudes are singing... I have been there at least five times. I can't explain why. I find the food to be fresh and yummy and the jingle to be infectious and fun.
Way to go!!
The first time my fiance saw one of those ads, he called me up and said, "If the Punk Rock Kittens guy didn't make this Quizno's ad that I just saw, then he needs to sue somebody!" Yep, Joel's style is quite distinctive. I like the ads, and have to give Quizno's major props for trying something different and fun.
Posted by: Kate at February 28, 2004 3:18 PMLAY OFF The spazzed out hamster for quiznos actually i never knew whata quiznos was untill the singing hamster pointed me in that direction if they were to change mascots i would quit eating quiznos"THEY HAVE A PEPPER BAR"
Posted by: Jason at February 28, 2004 3:33 PMI think the commercials are discusting too. It won't stop me from eating there because I know it is just a marketing ploy. However, it might just be enough to make me turn the channel to something else while it finishes - and I might not turn it back. I wonder how that would make the shows that are allowing them to buy time to feel?
Posted by: Mark at February 28, 2004 10:33 PMHell, I surf the channels looking for that commercial. So when I see it, I'll leave it on that channel and watch whatever program is on. That will even it out for you not watching it. Well, I won't do that if it is on that damn lifetime channel, because that channel sucks. A lot.
Posted by: Argo at February 29, 2004 12:40 AMi love the Quizno guys cuz they have the funny singing voices and they are soo damn funny lookin.

PERSONALLY I THINK YOU PEOPLE WHO THINK THOSE THINGS ARE DISGUSTING ARE REALLY god i have no word for it. But seriously, its suppose to be funny. They are RATS with HUMAN EYES and HUMAN MOUTH. NOT MONKEYS, NOT ANYTHING ELSE. RATS. ...it makes me hungry, HAH! Whats the lyrics? *We love the subs, subs are a dollar off, if you bring enough coupons, (something burrito or durrito something else about rise for subs) (Any coupon box?) (beware of baby goats?) EAT AT QUIZNO SUBS!*... help me, no sense, laughing... to hard...
All of you who hate this commercial are fucking retarded. You all suck ass. The commercials are origional and hlarious to boot.
Posted by: Pheldd at April 10, 2004 11:53 PMQuiznos has the WORST commercials in the history of advertising. Some people claim these commercials attract attention. So what! O.J. Simpson and Michael Jackson have attracted at lot of attention, and it hasn't increased their incomes. I tried one Quiznos sandwich about a year ago and was disappointed. Their wolf commercial was sick. In addition, their spongmonkey commerical has bad music performed by something that looks like a cross between a furry phallus and some kind of vermine. Someone at Quiznos is either very stupid or very sick.

Posted by: Libby at May 22, 2004 11:15 AMHi. As a Quiznos Sub employee, I'll be the first to tell you that our subs are strictly made of high quality meats and cheeses. Who cares about the sponge-monkeys on the commercials? Sure, they're not so easy on the eyes, but they're a great way of attracting business. I get at least 5 people a night coming in the store just to ask what those little creatures are on the commercials, and they tell me all about how they think those little things are absolutely the best way to get customers.

That show was an insult to my intelligence and now hes back...Nooooo....The marketing blunder of the creatures was bad enough,,I guess Baby Bob was on sale and very cheap...David Letterman said it best when he described Baby Bob as (creepy), I just think he sucks..

The promotion insteads allows for one sandwich and a salad or soup. They have a 1.2.3. explanation below the Choose 2 sign, but no one has the time when standing in line behind people to read and understand the offer. You find out when you pay!!!
