January 19, 2004DVD...R....Plus...Minus? WhatEVER!In yesterday's OfficeMax Sunday ad flier, I saw it. An 8X DVD burner for $69! Ok, well, after you add in the mail-in rebate. Aside from the fact that I'd never heard of KHypermedia, it looked like a great deal. So I jumped on it. $120 out the door, with a $50 rebate via the mail. Not bad! [However, I didn't realize the DVD+R/RW media was so expensive. Reminds me of the early CD-R/RW days] So, now I sit and stare at it in the box wondering, did I get the right one? DVD DVD+R DVD-R DVD+RW DVD-RW DVD-RAM Sheesh! Can't we all just get along? I can tell you I won't be buying a DVD combo +/- R/RW drive. This is just for fun. A gadget. $70 is reasonable to me. So, today I need to spend a little time researching DVD "Plus" and make sure it is right for what I want to do: Data Archives and making home movies for the stand-alone DVD player. They can't make anything simple anymore, can they? file this under TechnoGadgetsPosted by on January 19, 2004 @ January 19, 2004 12:53 PM 1 folks had something to say |
Sony (and now a number of other makers) made it a bit easier... DVD+-R/RW burns are getting to be pretty common now and that's usually the way to go. regular DVD's, mortals like us can't make readily. Most home players (and computer drives) will play one or the other (if not both) so there's usually some trial and error involved, which is very much like the early CD-R days.
One thing I have noticed is how crappy the normal "included" software is... I found what came with my drive to be so bad that it became unusable... while I somehow like the "out of sync" video to audio, I would like the option of not having it instead of getting it by default.
