September 23, 2003Head games, always you and me, babyThis is for the ladies out there, mostly. When I was a kid, I remember my cousin Shelly had this big Baribie head (well it was big then, probably since I was a wee lad). Do any of you gals remember those? I think they are called "Make Me Pretty Barbie" now. (Interestingly, I could find no online gallery of the Barbie Styling heads. I think that would be interesting. I just may start one up.) I know they still make them, so I went looking for one of these for my little cousin and had a hard time finding something simple. They are just so FUNKY now. What I remember is a very simple Barbie head that my cousin would play with for hours. She'd wash and curl and brush her hair, put make-up on her, put on jewelry and such. I think it had a large base with a tray of some sort. She really loved it. I also remember how her brother and I would tease her mercilessly and do awful things to the Barbie Head to upset her when she wasn't looking. But now these Baribe heads have all these wild hair weaves and extensions and talk and do this and that. Excuse me while I rant: Why do these new Barbie heads have to TALK??? What ever happened to something called IMAGINATION? MAKE-BELIEVE??? It reminds me of a few years ago when we went looking for a stick horse and every stinkin' one of them made sounds! Why? Can't we just give children a stick horse and let them add the sounds themselves? What has become of these little minds now that every toy has to come with its own soundtrack??? OK, rant over. It is wearing me out. Isn't anything simple anymore? You don't even have to put make-up on her now. They use that weird hot water/cool water voodoo now. What? Is actual make-up dangerous now? Was there a lawsuit somewhere and now little girls can't put actual make-up on Barbie? Heck, why even bother with the Barbie head? Why not just put it on the computer. Ugh, I don't believe it - they did! Feel free to post your Baribie Styling Head memories here, and be sure to let me know if my rant is without merit. i had one, and yeah, it had a tray on the bottom that had the powder make up bits (eyeshadow, blush) and separate lipsticks i think, i can't remember...anyway, i don't see the point in making it talk...adding more fun stuff to do w/hair is ok...talking?? if mine talked, i would have freaked the f*** out!! crazy...i didn't know many boys, i never got teased over my Barbie head ;) eventually she got a very short hair cut and wasn't much fun after that...hehe
Posted by: azure at September 23, 2003 10:11 AMHey, that Barbie CD-ROM can be quite fun! ;) My little sister has it from a few years ago.
I always wanted a head but never got one. Early '80's Barbies are a hot topic, still, in this house.
Posted by: Shawn at September 23, 2003 10:38 AMNever had a Barbie head but I do remember them. As for today's Barbie, maybe they don't come with makeup because some study group found that parents didn't want to deal with makeup on the walls, in the carpet, etc. Maybe somewhere, somebody bought one for a child who was too young to have it and ate the makeup.
As for the CD ROM, my daughter has it and just LOVES it. There are SO many different hair styles, clothing, jewelry, accessories, and makeup options for several different occasions. She can make wonderful creations without the frustration of not getting the hair to do right. She can then print out her creations to share with the rest of us or save them in an almbum within the program. Also, she can give Barbie a short hair-do without ruining it.
I had Atheletic Ken. He came with a track suit, and yet immediately after opening the package, I checked to see if my new ken doll had a package of his own (what else would an 8 yr. old do?). He did. Then, a couple months later I got Mr. Heart (aka, married Ken) and he had briefs on. Hmmm... interesting... So, unmarried, atheltic ken sews his wild oats and prays for failed crops while married ken has permanent tightie whities. Got to love marketing.
Posted by: amy at September 23, 2003 2:26 PMMy sister had one of those Barbie heads when we were growing up (I never did get into the Barbie craze, and good thing because I have all sons now!). I think it had the makeup tray and all that nonsense. If I can find one, I might get one for my niece for Christmas. The whole idea behind dolls was to use your imagination and construct dialogue for them. Having them already talk is kind of a let down. --Stephanie, aka Tank's Grrl
Posted by: Tank's Grrl at September 24, 2003 10:59 AMYes, I had one! It must have been about 1972 or so, I got it for Christmas. It was GREAT! I remember it had a little compact with 3 colors of eye shadow--blue, green and brown (very 70s!) and lip color and blush I think--with little sponge tipped applicators? Roller for the hair were great. I don't remember jewelry, but that doesn't mean anything. I LOVED that Barbie head! I was looking on e-Bay today and found one--boy, did that photo bring back a flood of memories. I had to have it--even without the accessories. Somehow, having these old toys back makes me feel safe somehow. I know--weird! I'd love the accessories, if anyone ever sees them.
