September 20, 2003The Missing LinkYou know, the refferer logs are very interesting. One should take time to read them now and then. How else would you know if someone was using your images on their site? Now, I don't mind someone using the Monday Miisson buttons on their site - as long as they copy the image to their own server and use it there. But displaying an image on your site when it resides on MY server, well, that's just plain rude. It is called "Hot Linking" and it steals the bandwidth you've paid for your own site's use. Well thanks to SeaDoc, I've put a stop to it. And it was SO easy. You can even substitute an image of your choice for those linked off-site. I chose the polite route, but I've seen some very funny ones too. Further Reading: Posted by on September 20, 2003 @ September 20, 2003 01:25 AM 4 folks had something to say |
Off topic - I like the new look!
Posted by: Kristin at September 21, 2003 7:43 AMI have a porn site that's linking to a background image on one of my old blog designs. I couldn't figure out what they were linking to, only that the guy had copied my stylesheet... that's when I realized that I'd added the background image to the body tags!
As soon as I figured it out, I put up a "bandwidth theft is wrong" kind of image. Unfortunately, a week later, the porn site was *still* linking to that very same image so I pulled it altogether. My referral logs still show the porn site hitting my images directory, and they're the cause of 80% of all referral failures, but at least they're not stealing any more bandwidth.

Posted by: Noelle at September 22, 2003 10:40 AMGlad I was of help Promo.
Noelle: Put that code in your .htaccess file.
Pretty much just follow the direction in the linked article. I would put it towards the top, under your Error Document code.
