September 11, 2003Double CheeseburgerOne of the more unusual hits I get from Google is on the phrase "large orange drink" and "drink, say it drink" and such. So for those that wind up here, I am gonna give you the info for which you are searching. Regular readers feel free to skip this, but believe it or not, this is really going to help some Googlers out! All those lines are from a comedy routine heard very often on "Dr. Demento" and (where I heard it) "John Lander's Hit Music USA" program back in the 90's. Lander at one time had a Countdown show that was syndicated, and I think he was a DJ somewhere in Texas (he works elsewhere now). Although Lander's show called the bit "Son of Cheeseburger" it is actually called "Fast Food" by Stevens & Grdnic. You can find it on "Dr. Demento: 25th Anniversary Collection" Audio CD (August 22, 1995) from Rhino Records. The team of Ron Stevens and Joy Grdnic also had a few releases of their own (and are still kickin' out the comedy), and this bit can be found on their album "Retail Comedy at Wholesale Prices" (view tracklist) if you can find it (yeah, good luck on that). According to Daves Datebook, it was first played on Dr. D's show in 1982. I think it is hilarious, and if you've ever ordered from a Drive-Through window, you will identify with the bit instantly! I would love to hear the rest of their works. As for this bit, I have it, but can't share it, wouldn't want the RIAA Music Nazis knocking down my door. Maybe you can find it on Kazoo (wink) but that would be wong. Further Reading: Posted by on September 11, 2003 @ September 11, 2003 10:59 AM 3 folks had something to say |
I have Joy and Ron's "Retail Comedy..." album on a cassette. I listened to it the other day and it is as funny as ever. I hope they are happy and being creative so I can look forward to listening to them in the future.
Posted by: Tom Spahr at October 31, 2004 8:30 PMI recently found an interview with both Ron and Joy recorded in 2005. A Google search of their names will bring it up. It is in two parts and in mp3 format. The first part includes Fast Food. It is right at the beginning.
Just thought I'd mention. I'm from Saint Louis (where they now live) and have heard some of their newest comedy. It's pretty funny.
Posted by: Charlie at January 26, 2007 9:06 PMWow, this sure brings back memories :) You're right.. John Lander used to work at a top 40 station called 93Q (the 'Q Morning Zoo') in Houston, TX in the early 80s. He used to play the 'son of cheeseburger' bit on that show.
Eventually though, they turned 93Q into a country station and let John Lander go, along with all of his crew :( It's too bad, because even after all these years, it was the best morning show I ever heard.
