August 28, 2003Looks at BooksI've said before I don't like to read a book on the PC. The whole Microsoft Reader Free Ebook campaign hasn't changed my mind either. True, I can read them on a Pocket PC, but that isn't much better. Now, a Tablet PC, that would be ideal. But I don't have one, so let's move on. Not sure which week of 20 this is, but our Free books this week are: Selecting the Pope The Blind Assassin The Sinner So about $50 worth of books for nada. Not bad except.....
I've looked around for confirmation, but can't find any. However, I believe these books have a built-in DRM (Digital Rights Manager) that cause them to expire in a week on a Pocket PC. Maybe not. Mine won't so to me, they are useless. OK, I feel like a fool. Apparently MS didn't properly update my Pocket PC Reader via it's web page procedure. I had to DL the new Reader and do a full reinstallation! If you want it done right, don't trust it to the Microsoft tools. It works now. It is just SLOOOOOOOW. OK, I'm a dope. Let's move on.... Interestingly, the whole Free ebooks thing is just a trick to get you to upgrade the Free MS Reader and the new DRM5. Yeah, seems the old Reader's DRM was easily cr@cked. Guess what? The new DRM has been cr@cked too! DRM is fun! Posted by on August 28, 2003 @ August 28, 2003 03:55 PM 0 folks had something to say |
