August 28, 2003Feed BagI've been testing Nick Bradbury's Feed Demon, an RSS reader. Kinda like a newspaper of all your Blog reads in one window. Right now, opening all your blog reads for the day in a browser is a chore. Lots of windows open, right (unless you are using a tabbed browser, which you should be). Lots of resources drained loading all the images and goofy stuff folks put on their blog home page (guilty!). Wouldn't it be nice to get all those reads in one program? Well you can, if the site you read supports XML/RSS/RDF. Don't worry about what all that means, just know that it serves up the "meat" of a blog, without all the "bread." You can read the content of the blog without going to the site. If, and only IF they have an XML/RSS feed. Does your Blog give out full RSS? Be sure it does, go grab this template and paste it into your Blog templates. C'mon, do it! Chris Pirillo is championing RSS like crazy, so just scoot on over there to learn more. Do not fear RSS/XML, it is coming at you fast so you may as well brush up on it. Well there are many feed readers out there, and I've tried many of them. But this one is the one I've come to use more than any other. Some are free, some (most) aren't. Which is fine, I will pay for shareware that I can't live without (like Netcaptor and MP3-boss). Many folks like NewsGator since it blends right into Outlook. I use Outlook at work, but I prefer not to. What I like about Feed Demon is the familiar layout. Plus it is easy to use, and has a very logical layout. Give it a try, you may be blown away by the simplicity and power of Feed Demon. My only issue is I can't seem to drag and drop a link from the Browser to the program to get it to start the Add Channel wizard. Small gripe though, otherwise it is doing just what I want it to do. Yeah, so that's my review. If you want more encouragement, read the comments left on Brad's Blog. It is in Beta now, and who knows what the final cost will be. Not that it matters, if he takes PayPal, count me in! Start Your XML/RSS journey with these resources: Thanks to Melissa for inspiring my post and to Jennifer for encouraging folks to use full post templates (we still have a long way to go Jenn)!
