July 15, 2003You're Gonna Put That Where?Just a short update on the Colonoscopy yesterday. I journaled the entire weekend (in a notebook - how old school of me), so that will go up as either a post or a stand-alone page. I want to be sure anyone considering the procedure knows what to expect, but in the end (pun, ha!), it is really worth it. As for me, the prep was a killer. No solid food for about 48 hours, mostly water, gelatin, broth, juice, tea, and popsicles. That was hard! Then there was the MIRALAX! The name tells you all you need to know! Horrid stuff to drink, and even worse to pass. But you have to clean out the pipes so the scope cam is able to see. Ace Ventura saying "Do NOT go in there" comes to mind! Yesterday's procedure was a breeze. Worst part was the nurses poking me three times in as many places to insert the IV. I have tiny veins apparently. Man that hurt! The Doctor was late, so I laid on the table for about an hour longer than I should have. But M'Lady was able to come in and keep me company. It helped, but you sure feel insecure half-nekkid on a table with tubes coming out of your body. I was under "conscious sedation" during the procedure, which means I will respond to the nurses or Doctor if they need me to shift, but I don't feel or remember a thing. Gotta love that! They snipped off two things that "may be polyps" or may not. They were about as big as a frekle, but the Doctor decided to take them off anyway. Apparently I was pretty entertaining to talk to as the sedative wore off. M'lady told me all about what I said, and I am sure she is making that up. Eventually I could stand, so the nurse wheelchair-ed me to the car and m'Lady drove me home. I slept most of the way. Though I don't remember it much, I know that Bacon-Cheesburger and malt she bought me was the best one I ever had. I pretty much inhaled it! As for the polyps, I expect to hear later in the week if it was anything to be concerned about. Otherwise, everything looked fine and I am not expected back for 3-5 years. I wouldn't be there at all normally. Not at 36 years of age. But since my Dad died due to colon cancer spreading to his liver, I go in just as a preventative measure. So do all his brothers. Everything went pretty good, and I am glad it is over.

Thank God for the Good Report!
Posted by: KB at July 15, 2003 10:53 AMGood! I'll be sending good vibes that the labs come out as clean as your colon this weekened!
Posted by: Michele at July 15, 2003 12:26 PMGlad to know everything went well! I had another good friend have a colonoscopy last week -- she agrees with you that the worst part is the preparation!
Posted by: lacy at July 15, 2003 4:20 PMLucky. I was fully cognizant for mine. Let me tell you. It sucks...big time.
Posted by: Brian Peace at July 15, 2003 4:43 PMI'm so glad that you got through the procedure well and I'm hoping for a good outcome on your labs. Take care.. Shannon
Posted by: Shannon at July 15, 2003 7:58 PMConscious sedation is the best thing short of being under general anesthesia. Glad things went well.
Posted by: Martie at July 15, 2003 10:39 PMYou're a trooper.
Posted by: Raspil at July 16, 2003 1:03 AMHA! I just went for on on Friday. My prep was a bit different than yours. Noon day before stop eating. 6pm night before - drink 4L of this nasty clear liquid. Next morning - 2 hours before going to hospital - self-inject yourself - with an Fleet Enema.
Nasty Prep work.
Then there was the procedure....
