It's not an acronym. It's short for Latin - statim - which means immediately. Though I am willing to bet that most medical professionals might not actually know that either. A student of Latin, with a professor who always wants everything IMMEDIATELY, gets fairly intimate with the word. :D
Posted by: Orb at June 3, 2003 11:12 PMJust like Orb said, Stat is an abbreviation meaning "immediately". Learned that on my Brady EMS Report Writing Reference.

Posted by: Hondo at June 4, 2003 11:24 PMI agree with Orb. Also a ton of medical terminology comes from Latin.
I am a pediatric nurse and I had to learn the latin meanings for each word, now I am a little rusty but at one point I knew most of the most important ones. :)
STAT means "one dose only" according to my sister, a nurse in the 1980s.
