May 12, 2003Aloha, C|net delivery managerC|net has a neat little daily radio program that sums up all the day's net news for you. It is supposed to arrive in your inbox every day, but I don't know if that means as a link or an actual media file. I like this idea, especially since I can (in theory) put the file on my Pocket PC and listen to the news on the way home. But one thing that bothers me is the Kontiki download manager they want you to install. It just struck me as unusual. After reading the EULA I noticed these passages: snipped and edited I had reproduced text directly from the EULA, but then they had a clause in them that refrenced this document. That and the Copyright and Intellectual Statement found here. So apparently, I can't cut and paste it. Since I am just a simple PromoGuy, I think I will err on the side of caution. Heck, according to their Trademark policy, I can't even mention their name in a way that may reflect poorly on them. Soooo, I will just comment on it and you can read it for yourself on another site. Ok? Does that not sound like file sharing to you? Seems like they are using your bandwidth to distribute the radio show you download from C|net. This part doesn't even include the privacy policy, you have to follow a link to see it. Nothing too unusual in there, but they do collect a lot of information (like IP address, assigning you a Client Identifier, delivery and playback information and a lot of personal information (if you choose to agree to that part of it). Heck, I didn't even know there was such an Embargo! But they don't have to worry, I won't be downloading this for myself, let alone exporting it to anyone. I hardly ever read EULAs but I thought I would this time. Glad I did, I don't want this thing anywhere near my PC. Apparently I am not alone, just read the user opinions on C|net's own site! Why they gotta make things so complicated? The solution? Visit the C|net radio site in Mozilla and click on the Radio Show's "listen" button. You are then presented with a simple MP3 file to download. Just point to a file and let us download it regardless of the browser we use! Sheesh!!
