April 18, 2003Maybe they should drop the "CL"I never fail to be frustrated by Classmates.com. Honestly, there is no reason to join unless you plan to pay. Years ago I made a profile and stuck in my email address. About a year later I went back and notice they had deleted it and put in some BS about not allowing email address in your profile unless you are a "Gold" member. whatever So I went in and edited my profile to say "If I had an electronic mail address it would be: thepromoguy (at) hotmail dot com. Put the puzzle together ok?" Heh, pretty clever eh? Well now I have all but abandoned that account due to the HUGE amount of spam I get. I thought I'd go back and update it, and maybe mention this site, but noooooooooooooooooooooo! Now you can't even edit your profile unless you pay. Want to contact a classmate? Pay up. Want to read someone's profile? Pay up. Well come on, WTF can you even DO at Classmates.com now? You used to be able to at least read about someone! Now they want$36 per year for the most basic things? No thanks. Not that I couldn't afford it, and nothing against any "Gold" members either. I guess I am just not living in the past anymore and don't need to contact anyone that bad. A few years ago, sure. There were several folks I wanted to contact for a variety of reasons (none of them healthy). In fact, I went as far as asking someone who did have a "Gold" membership to contact someone for me. Imagine a stranger contacting you with the a request from an old BF or GF to contact them and including their email. Talk about weird, but they did it for me and it worked out. No I wan't being cheap, it was all about the principle. I just don't think you should have to pay for Classmates.com. Sure, maybe for some features. But to update your own profile? To view someone else's? To send a message? I just can't get behind that site. Sure they have a right to make money. Plus there is no other site that is doing what they do as effectively as they are doing it. So sure, that is worth something. But I just don't care all that much. If I did, wouldn't I still be in touch with my class mates? I didn't even go to my 10 year HS reunion. I might attend the 20 year. Good gawd, that will be in 2005!!! Curiosity would be my only motivation for attending. And that is the only reason I would browse [cl]assmates.com. But no, I just can't justify it. As my Mother used to say "It isn't the money, it 's the principle of the thing." "I, I, I, Ain't Gonna Play Further Reading: Posted by on April 18, 2003 @ April 18, 2003 02:54 PM 8 folks had something to say |
