March 14, 2003Hit 'n' Run - 3/14/03Remember Suck.com? It was "THE" place on the web for "unpopular opinions on popular culture." For the longest time it was the hippest website out there. Then at one point they sold their souls to Wired.com and then you can guess the rest of the story. Suck began to suck. And eventually in 1997, suck sucked no more. In 1999 the remnants were purchased by Lycos, which wasn't so wise considering what happened to Lycos. In 2000, Lycos invested in Automatic Media and Suck.com and Feed were merged into Plastic.com. It is unclear (to me anyway) at what point Suck.com was totally given over to Automatic Media, but it seems that at one point it was. Then on June 8th, 200, in the wake of the "dot bomb" crash of 2000, Automatic Media went belly up. Plastic.com survives, but alas, the Sucksters are suckless. As Homer Simpson would say "they were the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked." Suck.com seemed to take jabs at web sites in such a way that you almost didn't realize that they were jabs. Not here though. I always liked the Suck.com feature "Hit and Run" so I am going to shamelessly replicate it here. Actually it isn't much more than a list sites I've found on a given day, but I figure if I give it a title, it might sound like I am being clever. * Senate passed ban on partial-birth abortions. Oh boy, think we will see any Bloggers talk about this one? * Did you know cars suck? They do if you own a Hog! * And while we are on that subject, Computers Suck too. * So what will become of me when a 8th Grader takes my job? I will probably be Drunk and Retired. * BoingBoing has pointed me to new about the auction of Sid & Marty Krofft's memoribilia. Ahhh, if I were a rich man.... * I also saw these amazing photomicroscopy images of Snowflakes (again, thanks to BoingBoing). Someone needs to make these into a coffee table book! * Aver Media has some links to Video Phone, Video Editing and other Video software on their Tiwan site. Kinda old, but free is free. * Folks with TV tuner cards in their PC might enjoy TVCards.com technology blog. * I've thought that I'd like to install PHP and Apache on my system to fool around with mySQL. Thankfully, ApacheFriends have created an All-in-One installation package. Sweet! * Can you play Doom on your PocketPC.YES! Why would you want to? Because you can! Oh, and you can play Quake too! UPDATE: I found another Doom for the PPC here - note that the "Compaq iPaq" version works on the Axim, the Jordana does not (too bad since it is fullscreen, sniff sniff). UPDATE 2: In keeping with the First Person Shooters, let's go back to the Granddaddy of them all Wolf 3-D! (Read the Forums too) The Axim version can be found here. Now all I need some to port "Rise of the Triad" to PPC and my FPS days would be complete! * Did someone mention "Rise of the Triad?" Oh yeah, it was me. Heh. This game was always so much more fun than Doom, but it just didn't get the publicity. I mean, any game that says "You Suuuuuuuck" when you are killed just rocks! Well it isn't exactly the "port" I was looking for, but you can play ROTT on the DreamCast now! Wahooo! * Just what IS that Javascript function to print a page? Robert, your About.com guide, tells all. * A Jury says Jacko owes a promoter $5.3 million for breaking a contract. He is getting off easy, the promoter had hoped for $21 million. Of course, an appeal will follow. * Ben's Bargains should be a daily stop for all bargain hunters. As should TechBargains. * NASA officials asked NIMA (National Imagery and Mapping Agency, a part of the U.S. intelligence community) for sattelite photos of the Shuttle Columbia underside. But NIMA was too preoccupied with the looming war in Iraq to make it a priority. * Jenneth's News and Views is one of the coolest PocketPC user blogs I've seen. That and PocketPCthoughts are daily stops for me. * The Super Duper Music Looper looks like a blast! Bet you can find it somewhere for less than the $30 SonicFoundry is asking. Demo version is here. * How about another "retro" game for the Pocket PC? Ok, let's try Monkey Island! Or Sam & Max Hit the Road! Or Day of the Tentacle! All are possible with Pocket Scumm! (Read the Forums too) * Why so many Pocket PC games linked? Because I just love my AXIM and I want to spread the word that so many options exist on the PPC platform. I loved my Visor/Palm, but I'd never be able to do all this on my old PDA. * I told you before about how TurboTax 2002 does nasty things to you system and is nearly impossible to remove all the components. Now read about it in greater detail and just what you can do to restore your system (kinda). * You've seen the Roman Polanski thing at The Smoking Gun right? OK, thought everyone had by now. How about Howard Stern's lawsuit against ABC? Or how the police had Elizabeth Smart's abductor in custody, not once, but TWICE and yet let him go?
