February 24, 2003Define "Celebrity" please...Nothing on TV right now could be worse that "I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here." Well, unless the infomercial for the "Wonder Walker" is on. First off, the term "Celebrity" must be a pretty loose one, because I am not sure how Chris Judd qualifies as a celebrity. I'd wager more folks know who "Stuttering John" is than Chris Judd. ABC claims it will run the show for 15 straight days. Yeah right. I bet once the ratings come in, that plan goes in the trash heap. Can't wait to see that. So, we've had "Surreal Life," "Celebrity Mole" and now the crappy "IACGMOOH." And they've all sucked. Why? Because no matter how they try, no one who is a "celebrity" will ever be able to make us relate to them. It can't happen. There is no way I can have real pathos for someone who will get off a TV show and into a Limo. People don't really want to see DownTown Julie Brown without make-up. Really, we don't. Please get her some make-up, for the love of all that's holy! Either she's had some plastic surgery gone bad, or she's got some magic mojo makup. Yikes. No, we don't so much want our celebrities to suffer in the jungle, or be forced to put up with Emmanuel Lewis' laugh, or endure Kathy Griffin's witty banter. Because deep in our minds we know this is just TV. And their lives after this show are not the same as ours. Their pennance is only fiction. They go back to the High Life and we are still where we were before the show started airing. No, we don't want our celebrities to suffer in a "reality" show. We want our celebrities to suffer in real life. It is much more entertaining to see a star fall from grace because maybe for one fleeting moment, they will know what it is like to be a "real" person. No TV show adventure can give us that. We don't need to see Robin Leach in sandals. We need to see some Hollywood star in a scandal. This is why these "celebrity" reality shows will never work in the long run. On the "Amazing Race" when people bicker and fight, and work it out, it is really real. You believe it. You root for some to win and some to lose. On TV reality shows, we could care less which "celebrity" wins. Because even the least of these so-called stars lead a life more charmed than most of ours. Kinda hard to feel sympathy and empathy for them. Aaah, but show me how hard they fall from grace, now that's entertainment!
