1. I had put on my list "a girlfriend"... but I don't think my mom has arranged something like that under the tree :)
2. That will be a surprise for me.
3. Euhm... this is something I don't really know... I don't know that many bloggers all that well... and besides I have a lot of trouble picking presents I know very well (like my mother or brother) :)
4. I give money to the salvation army.
5. Euhm... good question.. :) don't know... But I do know that I only attend the church twice per year (christmas and easter)
6. Actually all the 'christmas'-commercials, because they set people up to buy presents, and that's not the real christmas-spirit.
7. I would like to teach the world to respect one and another.

Posted by: anotherLisa at December 18, 2002 8:32 PMY'know, I've been thinking about that church question for a few days now, and I'd like to say something about it. While it's true that maybe some people think they're "putting one over on the big guy" as you say, it's just possible that there are way more explanations than guilt for the increase in attendance. I can think of the following; perhaps other people can think of more:
1) Christmas is a time when we feel a nostalgic longing for the things that comforted us as children. For many of us that may include a visit to church, perhaps to try to reconnect to those simple feelings of happiness and connection.
2) Churches usually look pretty nice during the holidays; sometimes it's just pleasant to be in one with everyone feeling good, the place full of flowers and lights, and people singing familiar, feel-good songs. Forgive me for suggesting that it may be as simple as a form of holiday entertainment, but that's certainly possible.
3) The family wants you to go and you figure what the heck, it's Christmas after all.
I don't mean to sound cynical, but the thing is that not everyone approaches the actual, physical fact of church with the same mindset. For me it's not about God at all simply because I don't believe that God lives anywhere in particular, and you don't have to be in church to connect to him, always assuming that he exists at all. Thus, going to church for me, is a simpler matter than you might think. I enjoy the ambience, the community, and the reminders of not only the season but the spiritual leanings common to most human beings. I'd go any time of year if I had the urge, but Christmas is a particularly nice time to do it. I also watch mass on Christmas eve and I'm not a Catholic, nor have I ever been. I just like the Latin service from the Vatican.
Posted by: dargie at December 18, 2002 11:37 PMSo it's Thursday! Sue me!!
Fave X-mas drink: Eggnog.
