November 11, 2002Ad-hoc thoughtsOk rather than a bunch of posts on Ads, I thought I would just put them all into one post. All spots require MS Media Player. New Barbie - Oh ick! This is a new "Groovy Gal" type Barbie. I am sure she is not replacing the old Barbie, but take a look at the spot. What are we teaching young girls? Is it me or is this spot showing them how to be shallow and materialistic? Heinekin - Macarena Oh now this is a good one, very funny. Makes me want to get sloshed with a Heinekin and dance like it's 1993. Computer Associates / Hello Down There - Very edgy commercial about PC security that goes where few commercials have gone before. Spam / Family Dinner - I would just like to see spam get the guts to use the Monty Python song as a commercial, but this comes close. Love the tagline. Brahama Beer / Voodoo Doll - A Voodoo Doll victim gets his revenge. One you won't be seeing in the USA. StarBurst / Prom - Very funny spot, but I don't recall seeing the last :05 on broadcast television, maybe that part was edited out and played only on cable. Good stuff though. MSN / Launch - Am I seeing things, or does this fellow in the Blue Butterfly costume look like The Tick crossed with Arthur the Moth? all above from this AdAge page Chevy / Inspiration - OMG! The artist formerly known as, and once again known as, Prince is hawking Chevy with Little Red Corvette!Not just his song, he is IN the commercial!!! WTF? I never thought I'd see the day. But then again, I never thought ZZTop would sell their song "Legs" to "L'eggs" or that DEVO would record "Beautiful World" for "Taget." Are these corporations not realizing what these songs are actually about??? Frito Lay / Salsa - There is something oddly gay about Enrique in this spot. Not that there is anything wrong with that! Adidas Shoes - Just watch this one, it is great. I can't say anything more or I'd give it away. Fox Sports / Lullabye - Hey, who wants a convicted rapist for their babysitter? Anyone? Anyone? Playstation / Signs - I totally love this spot, even though it makes no sense to me. Mavi Jeans - Oh this is one randy spot. Lots of ass in this one, lots of wet bathroom play and suggested naughty-ness. That is only UGLY Barbie doll! And for the MSN Butterfly guy, I thought the same thing.

The first time I saw him I thought "What's the Tick doing in a commercial?". Then I realized what it was. That giant butterfly SCARES me!
Posted by: Sunidesus at November 11, 2002 8:09 PMregarding corporate use of songs...have you noticed somebody (not sure who) is using CCR's "fortunate son" in a patriotic context by playing just the first couple of lines. the song was a war protest and not a very patriotic one at that.
