October 22, 2002Life is LieOh man oh man. How do they get away with it? My old web host, catalog.com, used to have a deal where if you registered your domain name with them, they would give you "free web hosting for life." Now I am not too keen on them, because when I transferred another domain away from them, they deleted all of my files quicker than you can say jack sprat! I lost a very important blog due to that, and while I know I should have backed it up, there was no reason for them to go nuts on deleting my stuff. BID..... So I get a charge from them last month for $24.95. Seems they have a new "club" and all hosted sites are being charged this "membership fee" now. Well first off, I don't host there so I don't get why I was even charged, but the worst part is the "free hosting for life" is now gone! Not that I care, but how the hell can someone make a claim like free hosting for life then 2 years later take the offer back? There is probably a clause in the agreement where they have the right to rescind the offer at any time as well as change the terms of the agreement. I've read enough EULA's to know about that. But still...."Free Hosting For Life" ... to me that means until I die or they go bankrupt. Which is probably what is about to happen. Why else would they change the plan? They have already changed the way they handle support. When you call they urge you to go to their web "ticket" counter to send in your issue. If you decide to wait it out, you are looking at a minimum 30 minute wait on the phone. At least they have a 1-888 number. But I bet that is costing them plenty, won't be long before that goes away I bet. And forget about talking to anyone other than the tech support. There are no options to talk to accounting or sales. Unless you know the secret extension code to punch in, you are sent to the waiting pool. I tried to find images or cached pages from Google to show you, but all I found was this affiliate logo. Anyway, it just burns me up that they did this. Not that I should care, I don't host with them. But I just think it is wrong. Wow! That really does suck! I don't understand how they can change that contract to paying null to a sum amount! You are probably right about them going under, cause what other reason would they start charging for this service??!!?? It just doesn't make sense otherwise! Good thing you moved on! Do you still plan on paying that bill?
*hugz*
Bigfoot.com did a similar thing. The hyped "Free E-mail For Life" but then about a year ago started charging for the service. Oh, I still have a free account but I'll have to pay if I want to change the setting. I don't bleeping think so!
