MT Hack: Get a user's IP info

This trick no longer work in MovableType 2.6+. It probably would if I'd revise it, but that wont happen anytime soon.

Here is my very first MT Hack! Or mod, whichever. This is a tweak I have used for a long time, and it is not that complex or anything, but saves me a few steps when dealing with comment trolls.

It's a cinch!

As you know MT will capture the IP address of anyone that leaves a comment and display it in the new comment notification you are sent.

So what do you do with that? You could copy and past it into a form on an IP search page, but why not save a step and make the IP address in the comment into a URL?
In your MT direcrory, find lib/MT/App/Comments.pm.

Find a spot around line 127 where you would like to add this information. I chose to add it after the comment.

Then add some code like this:

IP Address: @{[ $comment->ip ]}
TraceRoute: http://www.opus1.com/htbin/traceroute?debug=NO&query=@{[ $comment->ip ]}
WhoIs: http://ws.arin.net/cgi-bin/whois.pl?queryinput=@{[ $comment->ip ]}

(Of course, feel free to substitute your favorite IP search tool for those above.)

Then when you are sent a comment that you want to investigate, simply click on the link and see what you can find out about them.

if ur going to get someones ip over te.x msn u could send him a file and then type netstat in the promt window.... one of the upcoming ips should be his =) good luck!

Any idea how to hack this for the Comments.pm file that comes with 2.6+ like:

$app->translate('IP Address:') . ' ' . $comment->ip . "\n" .

I'm not smart enough to get it to work on my own...

I also do not know much about comps....so what seems simple to you to find someones IP address...is actually quite hard for me....can you please explain?

I have a big question for all of you ppl who know what your doing. I need some help and i think it would be great if you would help me. I've been through so many hacker sites that are all bullshit i need the real thing. I need to know how to get someones ip address pronto!
