Think about it this way, Burgess sets Anderson up based on a theory. The theory is that you can set certain events into motion with a possible outcome and create a psychic loop.
Burgess creates a perfect environment for Anderson to kill this guy. He then paves the way for the event to take place. He gives him access and arranges to keep him untethered and unrestricted. The precogs see this as a possible future and the events are set into motion. Since Burgess started the ball rolling and made certain that it would continue rolling, it made it the most probable future outcome. Thus the precogs picked up on it.
{Geekgasm!}
Posted by: Brian Peace at August 7, 2002 9:04 AMI agree there were some poor plot points in the whole thing, especially the fact that this is supposed to be the future, yet with so many technological advances how to they make sure that there is integrity in the precrime process? WOODEN BALLS! Whats up with that?
As for the eye thing, it may have been the doctor's way of getting back at him - the longer he was there the better chance of them finding him. Remember, he had busted the Doctor before.
But you have to admit, no matter how cheesy some of the plot points were, the whole deal with him and Agatha getting out of the mall using her powers was pretty slick :)
Posted by: Jim at August 7, 2002 11:02 AMMy husband and I had almost the exact same conversation about this movie. We LOVED the movie -- it was a great two hours of entertainment. But there were a lot of questions still left unanswered -- most of them you mentioned in your post.
ITA with you, Jim, the whole deal of Agatha getting them out of the mall was AWESOME. Love it love it. Get an umbrella. hehe
I'm also thinking that Jim could be right about the doctor as well. That seems to be the only explanation -- we kept thinking that he was going to do something horrible to him -- maybe pretend to change his eyes -- but not really do it-- or not put any eyes in at all -- etc. Who knows. That was a little "loose end" that wasn't tied up very clearly in the movie.
We too were wondering how the precogs saw the murder if the ONLY way John ever FOUND the guy he was going to murder was by seeing that he was going to murder him via the precogs.
Still a good movie though!
Posted by: lacy at August 7, 2002 11:08 AMMy web-board readings have turned up these theores:
* Burgess kidnapped Anderton's son. You can see him at the pool in the background in a robe. How else could the kidnapper have all the photos of his son?
I don't buy it, Spielberg would have made that very clear if that was the case.
* The doctor put a halo on Anderton and the rest of the movie was in his mind.
There was no indication that it was a halo the Dr. put on him, it didn't even look like a halo. Again if that were the case, I am sure they would give us some sort of clue.
But yeah, even with the holes, it was a great movie.
