I'm glad you brought this up. A lot of people are always saying "Don't be gay" or something, and the girls would say "Only guys can be gay. Girls are lesbians." Ok -- that was like in 6th grade, but whatever.
Men = Hefty Homos, Butt Bangers, Fans Of The Hershey Highway, Crack Caulkers, Lavender Boy/Lad (Obsolete by 1970), Left-Handed, Leinburgers, Little Brother, Lizard-Licker, Lizzie, Loave Diver, Labcock Technician, Lobster Pot, Porker of the Long, Luimas, Lumberjack,
Women = Carpet Munchers, Lesbos, Lesbians, Amy-John, Beaver Eater, Boon Dagger, Dyke, Butch Dyke, Desiel Dyke, Fairy Lady, Fluff, Lady-Lover, Lesbyterian, Lezzia, Lezzo, Mintle, Ruffler, Sappho, Split Tail Lover, Lizzy (Not to be confused with Lizzie)
Glad I could be of service. That's what I call 'em.
Posted by: Marshall at June 21, 2002 11:09 PMI refer to myself as a gay woman;to me the term "gay" is not gender specific. Some homosexual women, however, do NOT refer to themselves as gay, considering that solely a reference to male homosexuals. Some gay women prefer "dyke" (which I detest) or lesbian (which I almost detest more; it sounds like an alien lifeform to me). Most males simply refer to themselves as "gay".
I know. It's all pretty confusing. How about you just call me "Tess"? :)
Posted by: Tess at June 22, 2002 1:05 AMAm I the only one that thinks Marshall is mean?
Guys: Gay & Queer, Homosexual
Women: Gay, Lesbian, Dyke, Homosexual
everything else is just wrong to say.
Posted by: michael at June 23, 2002 3:15 PMI have to agree with Michael that any other terminology is just rude and highly offensive. Granted, that is just my personal opinion but I figured I would drop in my two cents anyways. :o)
Posted by: Jill at June 23, 2002 9:16 PMhey there, not related to this post (although i too think marshall's not a polite person...), just wanter do ask, is it normal that scrolling down your page the lines become narrower and narrower? i mean, the posts look like as if they're shrinking down to the end of the page, like an arrow or something...do you want me to send you a screenshot of what i see?
Posted by: giorgia at June 24, 2002 8:40 AMI call myself a dyke, actually, and I'd be interested to hear why Tess doesn't like that term. I see it as a word that's been reclaimed (not unlike queer) and it gives me an added sense of cultural identity. I also use the term lesbian, but usually I just say dyke.
And to be perfectly frank, the words on Marshall's lists are not the worst out there. Some of them seem a little ridiculous anyway - I've never heard of Leinburger or Mintle. I strongly suspect those are from a list elsewhere rather than his own creation.
But back to Promo's question! Gay men are usually called "gay men" from what I can tell. "Gay man" and "gay male" are possible by extrapolation, too. "Gay women" has been used but is less common. And I love lists myself, I'd be glad to add myself to such lists on this site. :)
Posted by: Etoile at June 24, 2002 11:18 AMI'm sorry, Marshall, nobody asked what 'you' call us. The third line of the second paragraph is 'Do they call themselves gay or homosexual?' As a gay young man, most of the lesbians I know say either lesbian or just plain gay. Among ourselves, we all use terms that are somewhat derogatory when used in mixed sexual orientation company (i.e. fag, queer, etc.) These are those names which we don't want to be called by hetereosexuals but it is okay to call one another, not unlike blacks calling one another the 'n' word.
There ya go. =)
Posted by: Sphekso at June 24, 2002 2:38 PMInteresting. Note too that a man who hates women is a 'misogynist' but what's the word for a woman who hates men? A feminist? (Erk ... I can hear the keyboard clacks of angry replies already!) In fact, the word is 'misandrist' but the fact that hardly anyone knows is indicative of our male-bashing culture.

Posted by: michael heraghty at October 5, 2002 4:24 PMMost homosesual men call themselves gay. I know because my son is gay. Some also call themselves queens. I love my son very much and always will no matter what he is. He is also sick with aids and that adds to my worries. Sue

Posted by: Paul at December 24, 2004 8:31 PMhey, just got into the gay questions. sorry, i'm always late for something. anyways, i don't see the importance of a sexual title. we were all born and given names, so for me, bobby will work. it's not like we are all,(the gay community), wearing beakons on our heads that say we're gay. some of us, like myself, give ourselves away, but if we are treating others with respect, we deserve the same. it's not like we're airing out our bedrooms in others faces
