MT-Blacklist appears to supercede any mods you've made to comment notifications. Here are a few links to work-arounds, plus a few other Comment Notifcation Mods you may want to try, and some nifty hacks I found along the way.

Even with MT-Blacklist installed, the comment spam keeps coming. Granted, it is nowhere near what it was before I added Blacklist, but it still comes in. I think the worst is when comments come from what look to be real people adding comments to old posts with URLs to spam sites ...

My home page is down due to a sudden "comment spam" attack with bad html imbedded in them. RSS feeds and posting work fine. Individual post pages seem to be OK too. Just the main page with the "recent comments" box. I thought MT-Blacklist would save me from this. Guess I need ...

I had no choice but to purge all of the "subscriptions" to my posts. Mostly, it was due to comment spam. Any comment spam attempt made to old posts, would result in all of those subscribed to the post getting the spam. Even if MT-Blacklist blocked the actual comment from being ...
