Read on, dear XF fan…
Didn’t you expect Mulder to say that? We all did! And so end The Eccchs Files. Or is that the “Ex” Files?
Man, what a sad, sad season this has been. Which is sad because I really liked Doggett and Reyes. I was thinking it could be a really good season next year with no Scully and no mythology. Kinda like a clean slate.
But no, the prospect of the XF with no Gillian Anderson or Duchovny was too scary for everyone.
Where to start. First let me go off on the last few episodes. OK, when the Burt Reynolds as God episode aired, I gave them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe when that was shot they had not announced the show was ending. And they probably had a few others in production so I had to wait it out. But then they still gave us crap episodes. No mythology at all.
Except for maybe the one with the Incredible Melting Spender. As for the one with the Alien Ship that William was able to control, I’m just like WTF???? Nice how they never came back to that one or even explained it.
But then we get the weird ep about the mental patient who works his way into the FBI academy. OK, no way would that ever be possible. But, while it was nice to see a resolution to the Doggett’s son thread, why ruin the career of the Princess Bride Guy? (OK, by now you know I am not a truly devoted fan: I don’t know all their names and I don’t know the eppie titles). Guess his career was over after he shot the killer, but who really knows?
CC and crew knew the show was ending yet they waste what little time they have left with more Monsters of the Week and oh yeah, what the hell, let’s kill the Lone Gunmen.
The Lone Gunmen are dead. WTF? Were they really just out of ideas?
Then we see Scully give up William in a blind adoption. I think we all were always wondering where is William when Scully is out running around? Why isn’t she spending more time with him? Sadly the baby became a plot hinderance, much like “Seven” on Married With Children (I am sure there are better examples of TV kids who just vanish after one season).
So SpenderBlob shoots baby William up with some gunk. Iron of some sort. And that’s just ok? He gets to walk away from that? Really? Would that happen in you town? If nothing else Child Protective Services would be paying a visit to the home of Dr. Scully.
Then we finally come to the end.
“The Truth”….not!
Well I missed 3 minutes, but it seems it wasn’t too much. When I joined the show it was on Mulder running down a hall to Ratboy holding a door open.
First thought, OK, Mulder is mental. I really thought he had flipped. Turns out no, those really WERE spirits helping him out. Ohhhh kaaaayy, what EVER!
Personally, I was hoping it would be our favorite Alien Bounty Hunter chasing after Mulder. Sadly, no.
Then on to the trial. I won’t rehash it, it was kinda dull. I mean it was nice CC tried to connect the dots and show us the whole conspiracy, but there was no way they could really do that. There is too much, and really, I think CC isn’t too sure of it all himself. We fans knew all they told us, though, the show never laid it all out. And since the show is the gospel, not fan sites and books, they did need to introduce it into the series and try thier best to explain it.
It was nice to see S&M express some grief about giving up William, but why couldn’t they tell us HOW Scully was ablt to have a baby when she was barren? It was medically proven she had her babymakingparts harvested. And still, no one has really told us exactly WHAT baby William is (or was thanks to SpenderBlob). Why and how was he made and who is really the BioDad?
Soooo many questions left ignored. Not unanswered, ignored. I think really the XF gang had no answers so they just ignored the questions.
But kudos to CC and crew for not introducing new hanging threads. We have plenty thank you.
I always love to see Gibson Priase. My favorite scene was when he was left in the water treatment plant with his “pet Alien.” How he got from there to New Mexico no one knows. And where is his pet Alien? And why did Mulder spend a whole year in hiding to protect Priase? He can read minds and control Aliens. Woo hoo. That’s worth leaving your wife and child for? Apparently.
The trial ends, Mulder is guilty. Kersh helps everyone break Mulder out of the bighouse.
Then Mulder decides to ignore wise advice to flee the country and heads into the lion’s den.
I wonder who was watching over Gibson when everybody decided to head to Texas? I mean, the boy was so important that Mulder spent a year protecting him, then Doggett and Reyes have to care for him, and then they bolt off in a chopper. Who has him now?
The remaining agents walk into the basement to see ALL the X-Files are gone, even their desks. And right then, did anyone else think Gibson would vanish while their backs were turned? BTW Doggett, I want that poster you rolled up, please.
Skinner and Kersh are called into a meeting with the Super Soldier/Alien. Gibson reads his mind and says they know where S&M went. Doggett and Reyes decide to go after him. Can Gibson not also read the mind of whoever is behind the door? Or is it made of lead? Oh sorry, that’s Superman’s weakness. I mean really, couldn’t Gibson tell what was going to happen to Skinner?
Also hard to accept Doggett and Reyes just driving off because Mulder told them to do so. Since when do these agents run? They always ignore that stuff and charge in to save the day.
And what was up with CSM in the ruins? He looked like a Shaman! How does he know so much and have access to all the information on the trial? How was he able to not only find Mulder when no one else could, but send him some top secret key card? He is a crippled little old man with no people left to control, but yet he has people give reports to him? Not buying it. And all he wants to do in life is make his son, Mulder, suffer? OK, fine. But does giving him the date of the next invasion really do that?
How about that big secret? Nice, really worth waiting two hours for. Whoo in 2012 the world will end when the Aliens return. Ah fine. Did we not ALL see the XF movie? So now we have a date to put in our Outlook Calendar. 2012. That is the big secret. Phooey!
Didn’t you expect more? I find it hard to believe Mulder couldn’t say the date and time in court. With all the other crazy shiznit they talked about, how the heck is a date and time of an invasion going to alter things?
It doesn’t make sense, and really, it feels like they dropped the ball. That was the best they could do?
And in the trial they are told their careers will be over if the testify. Is that the case? It is a good way to get rid of them in case CC doesn’t want them in the movies. But, now they just drive off into the sunset. We don’t know where they are and may never see them again. Ok, there goes a whole season of characters I cared for.
Then S&M take off for New Mexico. Again with New Mexico. We ALL get it already! The chopper shoot a fireball missle into CSM’s smoking tube. His flesh burns off his scull. Can he please be dead now? How the choppers manage to not spot M&S I don’t know. Unless they thought the van driving away had the Super Soldier inside rather than S&M.
S&M sit in a hotel room and sum up the day, and I guess the last 9 years in 5 minutes. And when they reflect on it, what did they accomplish? Nothing. This has been a frustrating episode (and a frustrating nine years too). I liked it, but really, other than M*A*S*H*, there are not many Final episodes that deliver what the viewers hoped for.
Early on, Chris Carter said that the only time Mulder would find his sister would be on the very last episode of the series. Sadly, he either changed his mind, or lied. I wish he’d kept his word.
Because all I can do is think back to the episode where Mulder walks into the field with the “Walk-Ins” and sees Samantha. He smiles and they meet. This wonderful music by Moby plays in the background and there is such peace for Mulder. That was a great episode, well except for how they wrapped up the Samantha storyline. I still want to believe that Samanthat is alive, is out there, and can be found. Not as a clone, not as an adult. As a child, as Samantha. That would have made a great ending. Like Mulder, I want to believe, to believe that a great ending “is out there.”
Maybe this finale was just an evil clone.

It was disappointing. We had stopped watching at the end of last season. I think the show was just floundering and there was a real disconnect. It started to become obvious that Chris Carter had veered off-course and was just sort of making it up as he went along. Agreed that the Walk-Ins episode would have been a great series finale. As it stands, I think they merely created a set up for the next movie. *sigh* Of course, I'll go see it.
